Restoring bookmarked 80-90 threads

I've been looking through some old tech threads that I had bookmarked and filed away in folders for different topics, but quite often the bookmarks don't take me to a thread anymore and I get one of these two messages:

Information. The requested topic does not exist. (with a url in this format; forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic . . . )

phpBB : Critical Error. Could not connect to the database. (with a url in this format; forum.80-90.co.uk/viewtopic . . . )

I'd also bookmarked a thread about how to mend bookmarks that don't work anymore after we moved to the current version of the forum, but my bookmark for this thread doesn't work anymore either!

Is there any way of me fixing these bookmarks to get me back to the thread that I'd saved, or have they gone forever? :(

Cheers

Tony

Hey up Tony.Threads do get auto pruned after so long.Methinks this is what has happened.I dont think you can get them back.

Hey up Rob, thanks for the info, that's what I feared  Looks like I'll have to start copying and pasting bits from threads that I want to save for the longer term.

Cheers

I had this problem myself a while back and found that the lost threads that I had posted in could still be found by using the search users posts facility from the members profile page. So if you posted in the missing threads or know someone else who contributed go to their profile page (By clicking their or your username) and "click search users posts"

http://archive.org/web/web.php You can try putting the link into the wayback machine to see if it works

Technical threads are not auto pruned, but they are archived !

Book marks won't work, but search will I think.......

Tony,

Firstly, this format won't work anymore... forum.80-90.co.uk

so you could try modifying it to forum.club8090.co.uk and then add the postscript e.g. viewtopic.php?f=1245&t=7890&p=7890 etc .

==== but then ====

I imagine most of the problems and their solution are along the lines that Nevill describes:

Threads are still there, either in the Tech Archive http://archive.club8090.co.uk/index.php

or:

We've created new subforums for better indexing and clarity when persuing the tech forums particularly:

So try searching THE Tech forums either by author, or pick out some likely keywords and try that. Use Advanced search, and practice with the options

Good luck, I imagine most are actually still extant (the forums alone is now using about 400 Mb on the database, so there is a helluva lot in there).. then there's the Tech Archive and the Wiki 8)

Where possible we do strive to ensure that links continue to work, but in many cases it's not always possible, due to the need to improve other aspects of the Forums, Acrhives or Wikipedia

Thanks Clive, that was one of the solutions that I was hoping for, but I couldn't remember the details of it. I'd bookmarked a thread about how to make those changes, but that's one of my bookmarked threads that doesn't work for me anymore!

I often use the advanced search and it's options, but then I bookmark useful threads that I find to save me time in future, but now I find I'm having to search for them again. However, it might be because I use Foxmarks (or Xmarks I think it's called now), and it has changed hands recently, so there may have been some changes at that end which have knacked my filing system! :?

I agree, there's lots of bliddy useful info in the tech forums and wiki. :ok

One question that I've been thinking about recently, when I use the search option, does it also search the archived threads or just the current tech forum? Do I have to do a separate search for the archive?

Cheers

Brilliant, just found some of the threads that i was looking for. Have to do a separate search for the archive, guess I should've known that, keep up at the back, doh!!

It's a shame that moving threads to the archive breaks the bookmarks, but at least I know what the issue is now. :D

Thanks everyone :ok

In some forums, I think I'm rifgt in saying that just changing then forum.club8090 to archive.club8090 might get you the thread, as we try to be systematic, I'll have to check if that works for any of them (there's a hundred reasons why it mightn't even if we aim to keep the forum, thread and topic IDs the same

The Archive is of course a completely separate and different forum, but we have configured as identically as possible, look at it as a sort of blank canvas duplicate copy, with a whole bunch of stuff deleted :idea

Happy hunting...

Just had a thought, would one of the mods please move this thread (if you don't mind?) to Tech > "Any other matters" forum, so that'll it eventually get archived and I'll be able to look for it next time I have brain fade?!!

Would be much appreciated :ok

Cheers

I just save a copy of the page itself if it is worth it - saves having to chase around bookmarks etc and you can save it in a folder with a more meaningful name.

How do you do that then? With a screenshot perhaps, or is there another way?

Many thanks to whoever moved the thread for me, it's much appreciated :ok

No prob Tony, a good suggestion.

What OBG means I think, is to save as to your hard-drive. Right click on the page itself and choose Save As; Web Page Complete is best option for Type (lower combo list). Then everything is always there whether its been deleted or not
NB. The Save may create a small sub-folder structure if necessary too

If you want just the text off the page, then Page Only may be the option
