Hi

I am new to the forum although have lurked around a little while. I have alwasy been a Golf fan.

Currently i am in the middle of possibly buying a van that has failed MOT on rust. But it has camping interior adn a new engine 8 months ago so i feel for what they are asking price wise it could be worth it

They are saying it needs extensive welding. I spoke to their mehanic earlier today about it and the worst part he says thats the hassle is where the rear wishbone mounts to the van its nto attached at all and all needs sorting on one side. Although he said the other side isnt too great and will need doing at some point too

Has anyone done this job. Does it involve cutting the panel from another van or is there a repair panel available?

Any help would be much appriciated as i dont want to end up with a van that is no good to me

I think you mean trailing arms? Yes, mounts and arms both been covered extensively in posts. Use the search feature top right for 'trailing arms'

and whilst the jp on offer are a great help ,for them to be this bad i reckon you wiull need to do a fair bit of work on the inners which will mean cutting open the wind bottom and no doubt the interior will need to be out so you can get to the abve metal and make good, need toi ensure they are set correctly for the geometry , so not a quick easy job ,
also what else is wrong as this wont be the onlky bit thats gone native

As mentioned, above the mounts may be perished, as was with my van



As you can see, gaining access to cut out the rot itself, can be a pain, we cut out the steel in front of the rear arch, then began grinding and cutting the rust out before welding in a heavier gauge of steel.

Excellent work mate, looks like yours has had a bit more rot then even mine did,

No doubt I'll be reviewing those pictures for a few bits i have left on mine to do

Sealed the deal last night so i am not the official owner just got to arrangee collection and payment now
