jerry cans, how much is too much??

i was wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with the law or customs for carrying to much extra fuel??
what does the law say??
as far as i can work out there arent any limits on diesel just on petrol??.
is there a difference if it is being carried inside or outside the vehicle??
any ideas?

333 Litres max, must be stored in UN standard jerry cans, labelled accordingly,and secured to prevent movement, loss from vehicle. Quoted from Health and Safety Executive.

isn`t there a new law about filling portable cans. plastic 5 litres max and metal 15 litre max ?????????

the only thing i found like that was storing fuel at home or travelling on the eurotunnel or certain ferries, the border agency just say personal use, there seems to be a big difference in the laws between petrol and diesel. its quite confusing

Is fuel so much cheaper somewhere?? or just traveling where there are no fuel stops?? Sometimes you just have to "suck it up" and pay....
Petrol is far more flammable thats why there is a difference in law..... doesnt take much to ignite petrol vapour...

Also check laws of countries you are travelling through.
Someone i knew got caned for have 6 x 20l on roof of there landy they had bought in Lux when travelling south.

Most ferry companies dont like full tanks and extra cans and dont differentiate between petrol and diesel. I was checked a few times over the years but not recently. Iceland will charge you duty if you go there with full tanks and cans ...... slightly off the beaten track I know!

As Elvis says, a few years back (don't know if still true) Luxemburg had/has the cheapest fuel in Europe. On a grand tour I filled up everything there.
But no point buying cans to fill up for one trip. The cost of the cans is more than you'd save on fuel. Would work if you regulary travelled through Lux or similar. Like all the Euro trucks we see in this country, but never in a filling station!!

Long range underslung tanks is a long term solution.. especially if big trips expected where fuel is scarce.... but as said.. cost for the odd trip doesnt add up..

Reading this thread just made me think of a section in Tom Shepherd's (2006)
Four-by-four driving**. When writing about loading and the need to restrict external "paraphernalia" from the vehicle in section 8.4 he writes:
There are many operators, however, for whom a roof rack is essential and in these cases remember that the maximum roof load recommended for most vehicles is seldom much above 75kg. This is enough to accomodate light bulky items such as ladders, small-section timber, canoes and the like.
Whatever you do, and however many times you may have seen pictures of the misguided doing so, do not be tempted to put rows of fuel cans on the roof. It will overstress the vehicle and is a handling-related accident waiting to happen.
His advice is the same as toomanytoys'; long range fuel tanks, with the proviso, however, that l-r tanks cannot be off-loaded as easily as jerries in the event of the vehicle becoming bogged.
