Hi I've got an intermittent fault with the starter ( 1986 , 1.9 dg ) it can suddenly refuse to turn over then turn it on and off a few times it then starts , my first thought was solenoid but sure I can hear it click suppose I'm trying to find out if it's possible to buy the solenoid septate and is there any where selling the motor brushes ? cheers

Earth straps to gearbox, battery to chassis connections. Leads and contact connectors on motor, faulty key switch or connections.

Replace bush (often the main culprit)

Get a recon unit and be sure?

run a wire from the solenoid to near the battery and just touch the raw end to the + pole when it won't go with the ignition switch.

the perfectionist might fit a pushbutton but the primitive version is perfectly safe.

checked the earth straps while replacing the clutch and contacts on motor + new switch a few months ago thinking it could be that so think maybe new motor is the way round this . cheers

your right I've not looked at that

check bolts through starter are tight and earthing correctly or test it by running an earth from a starter bolt to chassis.

I had a non starter for 2 months. The starter bolts were a good enough earth for my meter to say they were earthing but they wern't. Cleaned up the nuts and surfaces and no more problems.
