Popped my JX cherry today!

Yes it's true! I serviced my mate's '88 GL bus this morning. What an abortion that double-belt crank-to-pump-to-alternator arrangement! Who thought that up?
I've still got to change the clutch slave cylinder and a CV boot, plus the cam belt looks ripe...

Why you so against diesel Ian? I'd give my left ball to dump this 1.9DG to go diesel
Cambelt takes 3/4 hr max, serv less than an hour.
So much easier than petrol

I have to agree is is a right pain in the bum to change the aux belt especially on a Syncro. Mine should be okay for a while as I had a very nice man from the RAC change mine on the side of the M42 today!! Well worth the £5.99 charge for the belt!

Working on T3's day in day out I can safely say the JX is a much better engine.
Spare parts availability is miles better as similar engines are used in so many other vehicles.
Sadly the same cant be said of the wbx.
Agreed the double belt system is an abortion but easily remedied with a new smaller waterpump pulley and a 10x875 belt.

Simon, would you know off the top of your head roughly what size of pulley to go for so I can go a ratching in the local scrappy or even, do happen to sell one?
Cheers John

Yes id like to know this too, the double belt set up is the devils work - presumably it does away with those stupid shims as well!?

I wouldnt bother going to the scrappers.
Last time I bought one it was under a tenner new.
When I use a PC (proper computer) and not Sat on the throne on my phone ill grab the part number.
Only thing that messes it up is if its really early and has the larger hub on the waterpump, but we dont often see those.

Ah.
Fairly sure it's this... 068 121 031 K, fitted to loads of stuff.
Sods law, not available at Classic.
Maybe still get one from VW that's why Classic don't list it?
Fairly sure I bought one for the iltis and it was dirt cheap from VW

That's great, thank you very much sir.
Just a potentially silly question..... Why the smaller pulley? I'm assuming it's to keep the waterpump spinning at the correct rpm so as the van runs at the correct temp and not just to accommodate the belt?
