The nightmare continues

So, the VW specialists fit me a new engine, return to me with so called intermittent fault that wasn't intermittent, engine now running great so took for a test drive today.

30 mins in, fuel gague sky high and no water leaking from water pump. Why ?, look at the attached bodged fix

http://s1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj6 ... /Facebook/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; look at the first pic

After telling me that they check all gaskets for 'shady' ones it seems either they bodged the water pump hose up or just ignored the rubberised sealant.

I have tried to ignore the fact that they returned my van with no fuel can, dog hairs on the front seats, charged me £200 for a replacement exhaust that was 2nd hand and used my back box !.

I have emailed them and insisted on a fix at their cost. I anyone in the west mids is thinking of going to a specialist please mail me as I will warn you off them. Mind you, if they fail to respond appropriately, I shall get my pound of flesh ! .

i assume by new engine you mean a new used engine as that doesnt look clean enough for a new engine.so they prob have used parts from both engines to make one.but should have made a better job of it than that as kev says name and shame only way of treating thes bodgers.

It is a very nice second hand engine, runs great. They have fitted it in its entirety so not changed any parts. Clearly bodged up with sealant, I am fuming as it could have ruined the engine.

Is the O ring in the housing easy enough to change ?

Well, my VW special people have infomed me that the engine I have was the second one that they had fitted as the first one they fitted would not idle at all (problem now resolved with the help of the superb members on here ) and that they must have missed the sealant around the hose !, which is now leaking alot when you rev the engine.

They have offered me my money back in exchange for the engine I have and that I can have my old engine back if I like. None of this is really of any use to me as I just want a working van.

Therefore, I intend to replace the O ring that sits in the alloy housing behind the water pump on the top distribution pipe that feeds the top right hand side of the engine ( if you follow me ?). However, the Wiki and Haynes don't seem to make refernce to how to get at it. Having a quick look at it it seems I need to do:

A. Dismantle pump and alloy housing, remove from pipe end, fit O ring and reassemble ?.

B. Unbolt distribution pipe on right hand side, cut where the dipstick tube is welded to the pipe, pull pipe out, refit O ring, bolt uop and reweld dip stick ?.

C. Bodge it up further with moere sealant.

Any and all suggestions most gratefully received as I'd love to get my van back on the road this summer.

cheers, Tony

cut and re weld dip stick. Not 100% sure what your changing here but that don't sound right. Surely just unbolt bracket and remove tube and dip stick out the way?

Yes, the dipstick is removed from the metal pipe by sliding off a small clip- well mine was.

I'm having to change the O ring on the top water pipe that comes from the thermostat housing.

Kev the Rev commented that it wasn't an easy job, trouble is, neither the wiki or haynes seem to cover it. It looks pretty straight forward. I had assumed the dip stick holder was welded onto the pipe, hence cutting. If it's not, that's a bonus.

Has anyone any experience of changing this O ring ?

you may find the o ring is ok , but the metal pipe is corroded and its a non existant replaceable part!
