Whats a safe amount of revs to drive at? At 70 mph my vanagon is at 4000rpm which is still in the green zone (does this mean safe?) it's a 2.1 DG cheers

I don't like to take mine over 3000 rpm

There's me thinking if I'm a good original poster (OP) I can rev the nuts off my van

All T25 have a built in rev limiter. Anything over 6500RPM and the top on the exhuast valve detaches to slow you down.

jumping in on this thread..... After 20 miles of pushing it on a bit the blood curdeling buzzer screams unuil I back off a bit. Could this just mean its time to change the oil???....will using a 10/60 synthetic help????....DJ 2.1 sweet engine low miles?????

Basically you should use 15W40 Mineral oil.

Does it shut up as soon as you back off a bit ? Or do you mean a few minutes after backing off a bit ?

thanks for those....but just a little confused now.was that article the thumbs up for using synthetic?. I have a 625cc single m/cycle that needs the 10/60 not 40 as the oil gets a hard time dealing with gearbox wet clutch high revs and a small quantity. The Mobil 1 is £50 for 5 liters and is labled for older/ high milage motors. My thinking was the 60 side would help the high temp side of running??? If I back off a bit it stops almost straight away and only does it on a long push.....havent changed the oil in a little while...have treated it with SLICK 50 though!

A small rule of thumb with these vans....... If it wasn't invented when the engine was designed DONT use it.


And just in case anyone didn't catch on..... DON'T USE SYNTHETIC OIL IN A VW BOXER ENGINE !

I don't know what revs I am doing I just ensure I change gear before I reach the little dots on the speedo. My 1.6d didn't come with a rev counter so do I really need one!! (I want one but do I really need one).......

Just for reference, I treated my bus to some luxury synthetic oil last year and she smoked when pressed hard up motorway hills etc. Reverted back to mineral this year and the smokiness has gone!!!!! If only I had read about the oils on here first I could have saved everyone on the M5 behind me last year from having to dive out into the middle lane as soon as we went up a hill . It did ensure I didn't have any tailgaters though!!!!
