Welcome to club 80-90!!!
I notice you joined a year ago and that this is your first post.
Your hob problem is usually caused by the stove needing a good clean. Take the burners apart first and give them a good soaking in hot water with washing up liquid in it and then a good scrub with a stiff brush (eg. a nail brush) and/or a pan scourer.
Make sure the airways to the burners are clear of spilt grease or other obstuctions.
When all is clean and dry, CAREFULLY re-assemble the burners and try it out. It should then be OK.
Gas will burn with a yellow sooty flame when it cannot mix with enough oxygen from the air before combustion. If the air supply is either partially or completely blocked then you will have the problem you've got. The other thing to remember of course, is that when a burner has a yellow flame it is giving off more than usual amounts of carbon monoxide.
The above is the most likely scenario, but it is possible that the components of the burners have become warped and/or burnt away with age and usage. I would not consider replacing the hob until I had tried everything else first however.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome and advice Bob,
I had cleaned what I could, baulked at the thought of dismantling or rather reassembling parts of a gas system, but will take another look.
Pretty difficult to get at without removing the entire unit which would mean taking out some of the base unit...
Now, where's me wrench?
Nick
