Intermitant fault - no idle

Got 1987 1.9 Petrol watercooled DG.

Generally the engine runs beautifully with perfect idle tick-over. Occasionally, the idle disappears completely and whenever I stop at a junction/roundabout etc. the engine will cut out. I can only keep it going with some nifty accelerator/clutch/handbrake activity. The next day, everything can be fine.

Any suggestions ?

many thanks

Mine was the same. I changed every vacuum pipe. Still the same. Took the carb off an cleaned it to within an inch of its life. Blew out all the little holes in the carb. Then it was like a different motor. Worth a try if you not already done it. Dave

And check for wear in any parts that rotate in the carb - particularly throttle flap. Air leaks there (even slight ones) can play havoc with idling and can be intermittent. Your engine likes a known fuel/air mix at idling to remain in a stable state.
