Ok we bought a syncro double crewcab 2.1 petrol drove it home yesterday no prob, well this morning go out to look at it and there's petrol coming out the pipe that goes into the petrol tank, sorry I'm not a mechanic so excuse my ignorance not knowing parts names! My husband who knows his way around vehicles, ( though this being his first syncro) he gets underneath and the bracket supporting the tank is rotten as a pear also, and it looks like a new one will need welding on, what we need to know is will the engine and box need taking out to do this, any help and info greatly appreciated Allison

oh dear.... a sycro with no mechanical knowledge...they are not the cheapest of beasts at the best of times

i know that some people have changed the tank straps in situ, so not nescessarily an engine and box out operation. if it is the same side as the fuel is coming out, then the chassis will stop it from trying to fall out. it cant really go anywhere, but you dont really want it sitting on the gearbox.

i recently had the same problem with the fuel pipe. mine had a hole in where waater and mud etc got trapped behind it.

It's possible the tank may have dropped a bit due to the strap not supporting the tank correctly. This puts strain on the filler pipe grommet and could cause it to leak. As mentioned. Buying a syncro with no mechanical knowledge or support is a very very brave move.

Get your profile filled out with where you are from and get the van in to someone local who knows these. Vans for an appraisal.

Tank straps are available from ". Brickwerks. " as are most quality parts for the t3.

Hi and welcome. Its not uncommon for filler necks to leak when the tanks are full ( particularly when the weather is this good) but if your pump bracket is rotten as well then its likely that the tank has dropped as the strap will have rusted through as well. As has been said before, its not going to go anywhere but replacing the tanks straps is on the cards

Thanks for the info and helpful advice everyone, in my husbands defence he has stripped down engines, rebuilt them and all that everyday vehicles need to keep them on the road, he also has replaced the turbo and alternator and lots of extras on our t25, so hes very mechanically minded just first time dabbling with a syncro, so a bit wary. I know nothing about these things and I joined here so probably should of let him join then it would sound more technical
