Hi

I have a 1987 1.9L VW T25 and we are going to Cornwall in a few days for a 10 day adventure !

I have only had the van for 6 months and it has not done any long trips like this. Today I noticed that the water expansion tank behind the number plate was empty. The main tank next to it has coolant in well above minimum.

I have read a few forums that say that this expansion tank shoudl also be full when cold.

I am going in a couple of days so no time for full service / water replacement - not had any problems with overheating since I had it.

Would it be wise to fill this expansion tank with water before I go or not ?

Also, will this mixture need to have antifreeze in if the main one already has antifreeze in ?

Ideally the expansion bottle (the one behind the number plate flap) needs topping up the the max (just below the filler neck) with a 50:50 mix of the same type of antifreeze already in the system. As you have allowed the expansion tank to empty, you may need to top up (to the brim) the main tank (remove the engine cover) this is best done cold.

Whatever you do, don't leave it...water on it's own would be better than nothing at all.

If the coolant is pink/purple/orange it is likely a modern long life (organo acid technology) antifreeze so buy a G12+ or equivelent (see the label)
If it is green/blue then is is likely an old fashioned antifreeze (Bluecol) or similar.

Don't cross mix.
As you are using a little coolant check it regularly and keep an eye out for leaks...check this before the hols.

The antifreeze is blue and the chap I bought the van from left a full bottle so I'll use that with a 50/50 mix of water. I'll fill the main one first followed by the expansion tank

Can I ask why I should look out for leaks if it has not leaked before ?

Even though the cooling system is sealed the level will go down a little from time to time but any more than a cup full every few thousand miles and you gotta wonder where it is going to. Vans of this age have lots of reasons for coolant loss, and allowing the levels to drop can be dangerous (this stuff is keeping your engine from over heating).
Any leaks need fixing ASAP before damage occurs so coolant loss of any description is a matter of constant concern and a reason for vigulance.
