Oil leak via fuel pump - how?

I've got a T25 2.0 Aircooled. Had the clutch changed and am having a bit of a todo with the garage as it ran out of fuel on road test (partially my fault). They subsequently said fuel pump was knackered but turns out it was full of crap from running out of fuel and van was restarted and everything seemed OK.

However it leaked a fair quantity of oil overnight and to be fair the garage came and picked it up and have come back to me and said leak is due to the fuel pump being U/S.

I don't have the technical know how - so can anyone explain why a knackered fuel pump would cause an oil leak and what to look out for on a replacement.

Is the leak coming from the gasket or insulating block? If it is, changing these (or bodging with hylomar) might fix it. If it's leaking from the body above the diaphram it might be time to fit an electric pump & blank off the mechanical one as I believe they are hard to get hold of.

The Aircooled pump has a third pipe that tucks into the tinware at the bottom, this is a breather tube, if the diaphram is damaged by foreign bodies or natural wear and tear then it is possible for the crankcase to vent oil directly out of this tube, if that is the case then your garage is correct and the pump is knackered.
As posted above time to remove and blank and fit a good quality electric one.
