So the starter motor has completely failed.

I have done everything:
new bush
added extra earth strap
cleaned up gearbox earth
cleaned crowns
cleaned battery earth
new solenoid 2 months ago!

Despite all this it was still a bit slow but did always catch in the end. But this week gave up the ghost for good - does not even click.

I thought there may be no power to it. anyway called the AA today and the nice man tested the circuit and told me there was sufficient power and earth and that the starter must be knackered.

He offered to take it off for me - which i was dead chuffed about! i could do it but not as quick as he did!

He then tested in the back of his van with a jump box and large mallet and nothing.

So my question is where is the best place to get a starter from for 1.9dg? I don't fancy Justkampers much.

Take it to your local auto electrician.He should be able to mend it for you.At half the cost of a new one.Or stick an ad in wanted.

If it does not click it AIN'T the starter motor !! The click is from the solenoid and if that ain't clicking either it ain't getting power or it is faulty !

Not much of a mechanic then as he should know you NEVER test a T25 starter OFF the van as the bush in the bellhousing is the only thing supporting that end of the shaft ! Had it worked it would have very likely wrecked itself by the armature grinding away against the magnets !!

Get it tested by someone who knows what they are doing ! It is likely a wiring or solenoid problem. (E D I T = see last paragraph)

Leads me to suspect you still have a wiring problem (as long as you changed the bush (plain bearing) in the bellhousing as that is another cause of lazy turning over).

Have you tried temporarily fitting a known good battery ? (from any car- make sure you get your +ve and -ve the right way round !) I (we) have seen folks battling with a problem like yours, only to find the battery was failing. We had one recently on here with just that and he had spent days and days trying other stuff (despite our Ian (or was it Kev) telling him in reply 3 to check with a known good battery !)


My fave spares outlet is EuroCarParts (branches in most towns) I find them helpful, good quality and cheap !

its a new battery so should be ok. yup terminals are connected the right way round. new bush 2 months ago. Bought a new starter yesterday from GSF which i will fit this weekend. fingers crossed!

Just fitted new starter to my van. Been suffering from lazy cranking, especially when hot. Cables all looked reasonable and also changed bush, but didn't help. So after deciding the starter looked all of it's 29 years, got a new one from heritage. The difference is huge! Been for long warm run tonight and spins fine when restarting. We'll see how it goes, but happy so far. Cheers, J

My pinion drive was shot so had no choice at the time so I bit the bullet and ordered a Lucas (1.9 DG) http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/autoelectricsuk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
£62.00 brand new inc delivery. So far it has ran as it should. Not sure if there are any left at this price. Bye the way any body now the best place to get a replacement starter pinion drive as the rest of the old unit looks fine.
