Hi folks, I am neew around here, but a pro vw ex dealer tech so not new to fiddling with these busses. My mother owns a 1987 german import that has had a bit of a major hiccup........
So, It let go at about 75 on the motorway yesterday. Prob spent 2-3 seconds, maybe more, still in gear before she realised it had died. So what are my chances that I can just change the belt and get away with it? are these interference engines?

Working on the assumption that they are and that it is ruined, I have found a 1987 model non turbo 1.6 engine for sale in the classifieds section. Is this the same basic block? IE can I just bolt all my turbo mani and such to it and be away?

and if that doesn't work, what are my options for a reasonably easy swap/upgrade to a later model, and more powerful engine? its an old Passat engine that is the easy one right?

I dont want to get involved in a full TDI swap as I simply dont have the time to invest in my mothers second car, however if there is an easy upgrade as I may be replacing the engine anyway I am all ears.

Please search nazi's dont jump all over me here, I have a few questions here and thought you guys may be able to steer me in the right direction before I start chasing threads. Thanks for any advice you guys can offer......

I don't think you can fit a 1.6D head as, IIRC the oilways are different, they were from a CS to a JP which are both 1.6D n/a.
The easiest upgrade would be an AAZ 1.9TD, you can pick them up for around £300 and you can use most of the parts from the 1.6TD to fit it.
Search on here and Brickyard for more info.
Rob.

The non turbo block doesn't have the oil jets for cooling the pistons that the td block has.
