syncro diesel air intake snorkel question

Hopefully a simple question....
i have a K&N apollo air filter tucked in behind the rear light on the battery side. Snorkel pipe joins this and runs up the D pillar as per normal. where the snorkel pipe joins the apollo it is twisted/creased/kinked/ folded back on itself, to a state where i reckon it chokes the air intake into the Apollo by around 80-90%.
For now i can do nothing about this due to the fixed location of battery and Apollo. So the question is, is it better to remove snorkel pipe and let the Apollo draw its full air from the bottom of the D pillar, or get (very) restricted cool air from the snorkel?
This will not be a permanent thing, but maybe a month or so until i can work out another arrangement

My understanding is that negative pressure at the back of the vehicle will pull air down the D-pillar ducts (or in thru the side vents on a pickup). So simply allowing the K&N to draw air from the foot of the D-pillar should be OK. I do the equivalent on my pickup and inlet air temps are fine.

The last thing you want on a turbo intake system is a major restriction. It can result in all sorts of nastys.

Thanks, i'm going to disconnect it tomorrow, take it for a drive and see how different it feels (fingers crossed it will stop the odd bit of black smoke). Another kink to sort out after that, but thats in a metal section of air duct.

Guarantee it won't stop the odd bit of black smoke Lloydy, but then, that's not a good reason not to disconnect it....
Why can't it just be de-kinked and aligned better?
Overall, it is of course better to have air picked up from high up, it's not just the pressure diffs (which are minimal anyway compared to 1 bar), but the lower temperatures up there, partic in summer over tarmac. However, as said, you definitely do not want a restriction (like a too small or blocked filter) on a turbo diesel, but a small kink itself probably wouldn't do that unless the local csa is reduced significantly (say, by half)

If i posted a picture of my air set up, you would laugh out loud. I won't post for now otherwise this will turn into another kind of thread all together with me posting hundreds of photo's. Just believe me for now that the air into filter is restricted by 80-90%, the air pipe out of the filter is also restricted by about 50% due to being squashed between battery and rear light.
To re-arrange set up, i need to turn battery 90 degrees remount filter so it is better lined up and replaced all the ducting that is damaged/shaped/kinked in such a stupid way. for now though i'll just disconnect it. As i have more pressing things to fix so i can drive it

I will try and word this very carefully to avoid causing any undue excitement...
Are these kinked hoses "features" of your TDi conversion and you've got other faults to fix too?

Maybe not the feature, more like the sign of other things.......
Anyways, took the snorkel off of the Apollo and instant POWER! Still a bit Smokey at intermittent times. Might pop over your work one afternoon Ian, see if you have any clever ideas of re routing air ducting. Battery can't be moved 90 degrees due to fouling p/steering pump so at the moment still have one badly kinked pipe.

Maybe ask Rich about his as his has the battery turned 90 degrees.

Thinking about it, if I removed the ridge that holds the rear of the battery in its normal position, it will probably slide in more and fit

I only measured up to the edge of that ridge......
I've just got back from driving down the A3, before I removed the snorkel, 100kph it felt strained and gave you the feeling it didn't want to go faster. Now, it was a struggle to keep it under 120kph. Lovely engine, shame about the other stuff

ahh nice one lloyed what rpm are you turning @ 120kph is that an accurate speed ie gps or off the clock? ...sounds like your getting some sweet performance now you have let it breath

69 mph is meant to be 3500rpm
Here's my ratios in mph. I think 120kph is roughly 75mph? and i was reading it off the speedo, so not gospel

riches battery is in the std position but mario has managed to squeeze in the std filter housing and route up to a petrol snorkle.
i moved the battery tray and battery on mine closer to the firewall. the filter now sits in the same position as the origonal battery did and there`s loads of room even with a huge battery, its not that long a job. bit more work if you have the o/e power steering but do`able.
if you want room to work i`d suggest you do this also. if you use the appolo with this method you would have a straight run up the rear wing. be interested to see spme pics lloyd.
