Fuel Expansion Tanks

OK, don't laugh...I just want to be sure!
Took the van (1989, 1.9 petrol) for a quick spin earlier, when I got out I noticed a petrol smell so had a quick look in the wheel arch. Despite NO mechanical knowledge or skill, even I could see a pipe which should have been connected to the expansion tank (helpfully VW put two pipes running to the expansion tank so I could see I was missing a section of fuel line about 3/4 inches long (or 6 inches if the wife is reading this). I could also see that the fuel line that was still in place had seen better days (by which I mean it was barely still recognisable as fuel line!)
Nipped into Halfrauds (as they were 400m away and open) bought some 6mm pipe and replaced the 4 sections (2 each side.)
My question(s) : Having just checked the wiki I know I should have used 5.7mm (not that that was an option) but that 6mm "will do"...should I be sourcing some 5.7mm or will the 6mm be OK long term?
(I also now know there is another bit of fuel line in by the tank which will probably be in just as bad condition!)
When replacing the fuel lines I'm pretty sure I reattached them to the expansion tank on the same fittings as they were originally (does that make sense?) but would it matter if I attached them to the wrong ones?
Thanks
