alternator pulley alignment query

Hi
My van has had the same fanbelt forever, it seems. A 'non -toothed' V belt. I thought it was about time to renew it, as it mustve been on there for several years and was looking a bit suspect.
Bought new belt (toothed this time though) - shredded and snapped it after 200 miles!
Bought another belt, checked all pulleys for nicks/notches, all ok. Moved a nearby jubilee clip 'tail' - just in case. 120 miles later, shredded that too!
Have bought another! Closely examined pulley alignment. It looks as though the alternator pully (standard set up) is not aligned properly, and that coupled with the extra grippy toothed belt, has led to this problem I never had before.
There seems to be a gap between the alternator pulley and the 'fan' on the alternator....probably the width of the pulley itself! Seems to me that shouldnt be there! Have dismantled, but no amount of toying with the existing washers etc will solve the problem, so off to alternator rebuilding place near me tomorrow....
anyone got a picture taken from immediately above their (19DG) alternator please?
Thanks
FW
