oil warning light out

1983 1600 cs na diesel
During the last few weeks when I've switched the ignition on from cold recently the oil warning light would flicker then go out as normal when engine was turned.
Now the oil warning light doesn't come on at all when ignition is on.
I'm a bit wary about messing about at the back of the instrument panel and damaging the pcb etc, especially as I'm not sure I would be able to recognise a fault there. I think I've checked the correct connector at the engine which I believe is the one
at the far end of the engine block. Assuming this is connected to a sender unit can it be removed and tested?
Can anyone give me a procedure for checking out the oil warning light fault?
