flashing LED's

I'm trying to wire one of these up. As much to see if I can rather than particularly wanting LED's flashing in time to music:

All works well but when I turn up the volume my amp turns off. Why? is it sensing something wrong as the current gets higher?

Thanks,

The protection circuit in your amplifier is doing its job. That "design" is unbelievably crude and you risk damaging your amplifier. There is no transistor base current limiting and it will take as much current from your amplifier as it can deliver. Bin it!

Thanks, that makes sense then.

Do you think it would be OK wired into one of the speakers that do not go though the amp? I've fitted a 12v resistor but I guess that is only protecting the LED?

You will still run the risk of damaging your amplifier.

Have a look at this circuit that does it properly: http://www.instructables.com/id/LED-Col ... /?ALLSTEPS
To run it from 12V you will have to add a third led in series with the two in the circuit. I haven't built and tested this circuit so accept no responsibility.
