I've got a 1.6 (none-turbo) diesel and changed the oil and filter at the weekend. I couldn't find out the capacity anywhere so put about 3.75 litres in before checking the dipstick - and it was well over the mark
I thought it would settle down once the filter filled up but when I took it for a run up the motorway tonight the engine started to run away and the road behind was filled with smoke, I had to pull on to the hard shoulder and turn off the engine. I started it up again and it ran fine all the way home with no further smoke. I've checked the oil and it's still over the mark.
What is the oil capacity of the engine - surely it's not less than 3.75 litres? And what happened - has some oil been forced past the oil seals and will there be any lasting damage? - but would that cause the engine to run away?

Advice much appreciated as we're taking the bugger to the continent in a few weeks

If you're changing the filter, it takes 4.5 litres I believe - at least the TD does anyway. Are you sure you drained it all out?

That's what I was wondering, but I left it draining for about an hour.

I guess the only way to be sure is to drain it again and carefully measure the right amount before you put it in.

I definitely put less than 4 litres in though - there's over a litre left in a 5l can

Where can i find out the official capacity though? I've looked everywhere...

As stated its 4.5 litres.With new filter.4 litres without.

If it starts to run away on a derv its running on its own oil!!!! and 9 out of 10 times you cant switch it off!!!

Did you change the filter, did you drain it on a proper level area???

this is assuming it has the correct ally sump??

Yes it was on level ground and I changed the filter as well. it looks like excess oil has forced its way past the seals. I'll take another look at it next weekend..

It looks original and I didn't have any problems when I changed it last year.
