Having been under my Syncro to find the fuel filter, I cannot find it anywhere. Where should I be looking?

Hi Mickyfin,
If it's a 2.1 then it's under the left wheel arch. You need to take off wheel.

Cheers Tony, it's the 1.9DG. I had initially looked in that area, drivers side (LHD) but no luck finding it.

Ours has somehow found it's way into the engine bay (don't know how). Going to relocate it when I fit the new engine and replace all the fuel lines. It's a big enough cylinder so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Oh right, its a metal one, I have been looking for a small plastic one
Will have another look just now.

Nope, nothing, Im either going blind, and the thing is starring me in the face, or Im looking in the wrong place, but furthermore, Im starting to wonder if the PO has bypassed it, by removing it.
Ideally I could do with a photo showing its location. Looked in the Bentley, and it shows the metal filter, but not its home.

Just read, and checked all the photos in that blog, very helpful too that Rob, thanks again. One thing I noticed right away is that I do not have a carbon canister fitted at all. Is this an optional extra, or only fitted to certain Syncro's such as say the 16"? Mine being the 14".

Carbon Canisters are part of the emission control additions on Yank Vanagons. To ensure no petrol vapours reach atmosphere. Very rarely seen on European models.

Which engine?
1.9 carb or injection?
If it is injection then it is behind the upper left hand rear upper spring mount.
You will see 2x 10mm headed bolt/screws, this is the mounting bracket for the injection filter.
Carb engines only have a small plastic filter inline with the carb in the engine bay.
they don't have one in the return, although some numpties do fit them, to filter what I cannot explain!

Ah that explains things, I have the 1.9DG non injection, and yes, there is a fuel filter in the engine bay, which I was about to remove, and replace the underbody one, but seeing as there isn't one, I guess I will leave it then, although I'm a little worried about the fire risk.
There is a return type filter behind the carb also, but Im told this is not actually a filter as such but an overflow which assists incline driving with low fuel in the tank?
Cheers guys!

I'm sure there would be no harm is swapping to the injection style if you felt safer.
Wouldn't be a difficult task, and you wouldn't have to change the filter for 20k.

Good call, I may just do that and relocate the filter, removing the plastic one in the engine bay, and fit a Universal metal one underneath.
