Wonder how many of them have aircon. I've been in the outback in the back of a ute in blazing heat. I would not fancy the van in the heat without aircon.

Never used air on in hot climes in fact i always turned it off, it makes you sick do what the desert dwellers do and wear a damp turban it keeps your head cool and reduces the need for water and drink sweet tea

Something that is a shame: the two black tyre stripes up the side of that huge rock slab. It spoils the magic somehow.

On the black tire stripes. Many of the trails have small paint dots for drivers to follow in terrain areas where the trail is not obvious. Such as on smooth rock faces like you comment on. The idea is to encourage offroad drivers to remain on the trail rather than cover adjacent surfaces with random marks. So it does change the view from certain vantage points, but that place is so huge that the other 300 degrees you could be looking will still have a pristine appearance. The pictures tend to be of the vehicles on the designated overland routes, which means they've also captured the rubber tracks. But the good news is this ad hoc system generally works and when you are there in person the views are so huge and the area so vast that the tire marks are not intrusive.

Doug, I appreciate what you're saying. Yes it does keep people on the trail and stops them wandering about all over, so does reduce the impact on the environment overall, but as my father-in-law says about river management: "the solution to pollution is dilution"
What's best, concentrating all the wear and impact into one narrow zone or let folks roam free and thin it out? But then you'd have people driving about as they please and you'd have to trust them to behave themselves, drive carefully and do the right thing at all times...
Sorry this wasn't meant to be an aggressive opener to a heavy debate, just an observation.

However, you do have some of the best scenery in the world over there. What a fantastic place
