Hi guys ans girls i wonder if i can pick your brains?I fitted a replacement second hand engine last year just before i stood her up for winter and have done no miles in it since,apart from warming it up adding new anti freeze and bleeding.A couple of weeks ago i got started in the near side restoration and started it up to turn it around and thought i would look and see if all the levels were correct to find the expantion tank top full of oil.I have since removed the rocker cover to find it has water in the oil in there also.So today i have removed the head but still can't find no evidence of head gasket failure.Could there be water getting into the oil any other way?Any help appreciated.

I'll keep an eye on this thread as I've had similar issues in the past. I can't give you any techno' support but if the pooh hits the fan as it did with me I can let you know where I got my brand spanker of a head cheaper than any of the usual VW/online outlets.

I'm no whizz with vans but don't the 1.6 have a reputation of cracks in head. Also does yours have an oil cooler seen lots of people take head off golfs after seeing oil in coolant when it was only cooler knacked

The oil cooler is a regular weak point on these engines - £39 at Brickwerks.
The cracks are usually in the part of the head between the valves.

Where is the oil cooler on 1.6 cs please?

Oh that is the oil cooler, I thought it would be by the radiator

It the square piece of alloy directly above oil filter. Remove filter, on underside is a 27mm nut that unscrews, remove two coolant lines and slide off cooler. You'll need the o ring that fits between oil feed plate and cooler. Don,t be tempted not to replace this o ring as it will weep oil once disturbed. Should take 30 mins to swap and 3 weeks to bleed system only do when cold as boiling water and hot oil not a good mix. I have an oil cooler in garage not sure where you are though. I would personally run without additive for a few days to flush out oil. Once it's clear stick some g12 in

Many thanks i will change the head gasket and new bolts then change the oil cooler.I have a spare oil cooler that came off the engine when i changed the lump for the one that was on my original engine.I wonder if when tightening the 27mm nut i have cracked it internally.

Well guys had a great day today not.Having spent all morning replacing the head gasket,new head bolt ect.All was going well until adding the water,as i poured it in it started flowing back from behind the diesel pump.Thinking for some reason i had fitted the gasket the wrong way around at first,but then noticed something not right with the head.I think it could be off a 1.7 or 1.9 engine,the photo shows the extra waterway,show by the screwdriver.

I just hope this is ok to use as i have run out of options.Is it a common replacement using the head with the extra waterway but using the gasket for that head?If it is i cant see it sealing for long.I cant believe how pissed of i am.New head gasket and bolts no good to use again as they have been torqued up already £40 plus quid and my only day off wasted.As you place the gasket on the block,not the head there was no way of telling before it was too late.
