I wouldn't build an interior out of MDF, it's very heavy and if it gets wet it's fubarred.
I used multiplex plywood.
An alternative would be block board which is much lighter than MDF.
I have sprayed MDF but the results were not to good.
The paint sinks into the MDF.
You need to seal it first.
I rollered epoxy resin on which soaks in and makes it waterproof.
Rub that down and then spray and you'll get a good result.

Hubby made our bath panel from mdf and sprayed it to a gloss finish - its been good for about 6 years and is only now starting to show a little water damage along the top edge.
he put 3 coats of a decent filler primer on, smoothed it down then put a couple of coats of 2pack on.
If its ok in a bathroom, I can't see what the problem would be in a van

I'm with TITUS on this one. It's far to heavy unless you use the really thin stuff but then it lacks in strength. personally I'd use marine ply as its alot lighter & more durable

You can obtain excellent finishes on MDF. I flat after applying a primer or sealant coat to remove the raised fibres. You can use a base coat - just need several coats. Acrylic is also excellent.
As for weight, depends how much you plan on using but for large and cosmetic panels you can use thinner Sheet 4mm MDF to create 12mm thick hollow panels by cutting each panel twice and bonding 30mm x 4mm strips along each edge of one panel - the second panel is bonded onto the strips). Inset the strips by 5-8mm and you have a ready made groove for fitting the T-finisher into.
I used MDF for panel sections of my revised interior - MDF is not for everyone but I am happy with the results - the interior can be seen if you click on the picture of my van or the Year /Model.
