WESTY roof bed question (popup roof)

I have just got myself a 1982 westy (2.0 Aircooled). Really pleased with it. I do have one question, the roof bed has a fixed board and a loose board that you put in place when you use the bed. This loose board seems quite erm..bendy? I am no heavyweight either. It looks original but I am sure something is missing? The translated Westy manual mentions hinges? Any comments/pics/ideas?

sounds a bit odd. Got an 87 westy pop top and the bed is in 2 parts. when the top is up you can fold the front section over the gap. The hinges are pressed metal ones at the edge of the bed.
The board is a good quality ply - has it been wet as this may soften it up a bit.

The hinges are missing that join the front panel to the van. I can see where they were fitted but don't understand why they were removed?
Anyway fround replacements on vwbusshop.de. So I can get that sorted.

Ok it all makes sense now. I have the hinges for the bed (came in two working days from Germany) and once fitted they have stopped the bendyness of the front bed board by placing the rear edge on the metal strip in the middle of the van. Without the hinges the board just slipped off this strip and of course the board lost the support.
Still can't work out why they were removed other than the fact that I had to tap new threads into the holes on the van to accept the bolts for the hinges. Maybe the old owner took them off and could not refit.

Maybe the didn't use the roof bed and just store stuff up there? Still seams strange to remove them thought

Perhaps the Westfailure peeps are human after all and the screws worked loose,the ply rotted or the hinge deteriorated after 20-odd years of fluctuating climate !

I am about to take of the hinges because i dont need the second board. My kids are 4 and 6 but they dont like being up in the roof as its too enclosed so I figure if I take of the hinges I will be able to takeout one board.

Yeah mine was removed when I bought it, if your not useing it for a bed it just gives you a bit more space.
