If driven like a total tit, then yes. If driven with finesse and respect, then as per Andrew's comment above.

Depends how much you drive them and what you get out of them throughout the year

Isn't that kinda the point of 'em...? <grin> If you're going to drive a Syncro with "finesse and respect", you might as well have a 2wd.

I don't really want to dignify that with a response...

As said, No, not really, Expensive specialist parts are gearbox & VC, which seems to be circ £1200 each ever 20 years...... £120 pa. & twice the number of CV joints to inspect/replace. It just that these buses are all around the age that bits need doing.

I wonder if ARB locker-equipped coiler Landies get through as many halfshafts and front CV's (yes they do have them up front, if you're not familiar with all that stuff) as syncros, if driven in a similar manner...
Considering that they have a big torque multiplication through the transfer box and a lot available anyway from some of those 2.5 and 2.8 TDi four-pots, I wouldn't be suprised. I know the earlier ones with 10-spline shafts aren't as strong as the later 24-spline type, but maybe that's down to manufacturing techniques and metallurgy?

Not nearly as silly as this was to own...
(Yep, 4x4 - that particular bit of stuckage was with the new (mad Belgian) owners, but I had to get out via the roof more than once)
