OK having done al the welding nearly, I need to start filling, sanding and in ideal world could really do with driving the van again! ive always had the luxury of a garage to do bdywork in, but the camper wont fit anywhere, can I get a section filled, sanded and primed and leave it outside ( or even use it) - or is this definately a no no??

I'd be inclined to rub the primer well down immediately before its about to be topcoated [roller/sprayed] and re-prime & re-flat again.
Do this on a warm, dry day, preferably once the suns been on the bodywork a few hours so that any moisture has had a chance to evaporate. Any moisture in your primer will show it the top coat in the form of tiny bubble like blisters - worse case scenario - and the paint will eventually flake off

I use a cheap tarp, clipped at regular spacing to the rain gutter on the van and the other side fixed to a fence (or a couple of awning poles with guy ropes) to form a rough awning - works quite well!
Same as you guys, am always watching the weather to get out and do some painting etc.
