Does a T25 have nine lives like a cat?

Last week my van gave a little cough when pulling up a steep hill in deepest Cornwall and started running on three cylinders. It still had enough poke to make it to the top with the engine still running. We were on the way to a friend's for a meal so I limped on for three more miles planning to have a closer look once we'd arrived. I checked the leads, plugs & dizzie but it was still running on three. We weighed up the options: call the AA and get relayed back in the rain & dark in the middle of the night, or drive back to the campsite and have a closer look in the morning. We went with the 11 mile drive back to Blue Hills via Truro.
In the cold, damp light of day the next day the van was still only running on three so it was AA to the rescue.
This evening I collected the van from the garage and was handed the cause of the problem.

I think it's safe to say I've used up one of the van's nine lives. How the valve didn't end up being sucked into the cylinder and getting battered into the head on the drive back to Blue Hills is beyond me?
