Simple question I suppose but I could not find an answer via Google = Does anyone know how many gallons a 1989 Leisuredrive on board water tank holds ?

And do those Zig water tank level meters actually work

And do what hose equipment is recommended to be carried with you to fill it up ?

And is it safe to drink without boiling ?

Etc etc

hi Jon,Leisuredrive vans dont normally have on board tanks,yours would have been a special order,told you your van was special.!

I own a Westie with an on board water tank. So long as theres a couple of kettlefulls available for the journey then thats all i need the capacity to be. REM it will cost you in fuel to carry drinking and grey water (1 gallon of water weighs 10 lbs) so my advice would be to keep water quantities to a minimum. fill up when u get where you are going and empty grey water before you leave.

I travel with full fuel and water tanks in both my vans - it makes no difference in practice - you gain going down the hills Any difference isn't worth worrying about and if you wild camp everywhere as I do you don't always have anywhere to fill up and discharge. I fill up from rivers in Scotland - great water - just use a Nature Pure filter and you don't get any nasties. The only time I nearly empty my tank is on the last day of a journey home.

yeah I keep mine fairly topped up as it stops the water going 'off'. A full water tank weighs no more than a small adult passenger so immaterial in the giant scheme of things (IMHO).

Where is the water tank - under the rear seat? Cos if it is it should hold approx 60 Ltrs if mine is anything to go by...

I hear both points of view regarding weight, from Andrew & Oldiebut goodie, we use the van a lot for daily driving too, so I will only "fill up" with water if we are going wild camping (which we do sometimes). We always carry 2 large pop bottles full of water though, for those times when you need a quick cuppa and the tank has run out

It's under the cupboard that is where you legs would be when lying in the bed, i.e. just forward of the wardrobe if that makes sense. The flooring of that cupboard is pretty well secured down with screws and sealant (like the rest of the woodwork, eh Adam ) so taking it out just to have a peek is not an easy option !

Idea = I know we use around 6 gallons over a weekends summer camping in the other van (removable plastic tank under sink) so I could just pour say 10 gallons in via a funnel and see how we go on Mind you, if I could figure out how the level gauge works...

The gauge works by having a two pronged probe (about 10" long) fixed in the top of the water tank which are immersed in the water. As the water level falls, less of the prongs are immersed and so the resistance between them varies. If your water gauge is the same as the one on the right of the electrical Zig unit in this picture



then it does not constantly measure the level; you have to push in the button on the right until the back light comes on and the level indicator moves across the scale. The small rotational control knob next to the push button is so that you can 'calibrate' the system by filling your water tank and then pushing the button in and rotating the knob so the level reads full on the scale; then you just use the push in button as and when. It's only good for when the water drops down the probes though - once the level drops below the probes it's redundant so it depends how deep your tank is and how much is left once the level is that far down....
