starter motor problems

I'm having problems with the start just about turning the engine and then giving up. I have tried-
changing battery, changing starter motor (from JK) , checking earth screw. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Earth leads get quite warm when I turn it over but resistance is <1 oms between -ve battery lead and earth screw. Now considering changing positive leads but wondered if the ignition switch could be an issue or leadsfrom battery to motor. Can this lead be easily changed (JK lead is not long enough). Cheers

Should be less than 0.01 ohms. That's 100 times less than you're quoting. Clean up both mating faces, smear with copper grease and refit. Do this with all the big fat earth connections.

Could also be the timing too far advanced ? Gives the same symptoms

Advanced timing will not affect the engine turning over slowly and wouldn't lead to the heating up of the earth lead.

Petrol engine timing can and will give the "slow turning starter" symptoms , although more especially when the engine is hot and will also give hot earth leads as the starter is under more strain trying to turn the engine when the combustion isn't happening at the right time .

Hi All Thanks for the replies. We have got it started but it doesn't start again soon after. I seems to run OK when it is running ie the timing seems OK.
My mate changed the starter motor but didn't mention changing any 'olite brush' . Pardon my ignorance but what is it and what does it do ?
Presumably I can get one from JK or a german spares stockist.
If we can't get it fixed anyone know a good garage in the Mansfield/ Sutton area ?

if it was a new starter motor it would have had a bushing with it
it does the job of a bearing on the thin end of the starter , supporting it where it fits into the bell housing
where are you in mansfield ?

Matt at Autohausdolby in Sheffield is a good lad and is a VW T25 specialist round here.

Hi Mocki
The starter is a recon one from JK-don't know if it came with a new bush.
We are in Sutton near Junction 28 of the M1
