Setting timing on 1Y / Exhaust Manifolds

Hi All,

I'm looking for some more advice on my 1Y into T25 effort. Longer nights are helping so I hope to be mobile by June!

Sincere thanks in advance for any help - I hope to share my experience in a thread later when I make some progress for other newbies like meself.

I'm a bit stumped with setting the timing on the 1Y (which I intend to set while changing the belt). I've a few pics which illustrate my problem.

First of all, when I lock out the pump sprocket and the cam is in the position to be locked, the timing mark on the T25 flywheel I've installed (which is barely visible) ends up at about 4 o'clock in the picture below, when it should be at 9 o'clock (when the T25 bellhousing is attached, that's where the inspection hole lines up).

However, the camshaft looks to be in the correct position (with the pump locked), locking slit lines up and I'm told the 2 front cam lobes should point upwards, which they do:

So, does this all mean that the crank is out of timing sync? Is it likely that the timing is out on the engine? I didn't see it running, but it came with a cam belt on it. I've had a search of other forums but can't really find an answer. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.


Slightly simpler issue, will the 1Y exhaust manifold be ok to use?

I also have this other exhaust manifold, no idea what its from though, any clues? Need to get a downpipe for it.

Find TDC with the engine out like this. Rotate by hand, and you will feel compression and friction. If you do it slowly, the compression will leak away as you turn. As you get to TDC the friction will disappear for just a couple of degrees of rotation. At that point you can rock back and forth just a smidge without much resistance. The middle of that "relaxed" zone is TDC. Of course you must check that No1 is at TDC before you put the belt on!

You'll just have to try the exhaust manifold, to see if it clears the left hand engine mount.

Oh and your spigot bearing is hanging out of the flywheel. Push it in (flush I think).

Use the CS manifold and exhaust.

thanks, is the second pic a cs manifold? are downpipes available for it?

hard to see how the connection will mate

safe to say i should ignore the marking on the flywheel and try to get a proper dead centre that way?? makes sense to me.

one of the kind lads on this forum pm'd me to say to insert a wire into injector 4 and feel tdc - i intend to do this.

bought the van off a very sound lad from galway, he's at vantastival this weekend and i'm trying to give him a break from questions!!

Just putting up this in case someone has the same issue as me and searches.

Big thanks to pete abbot who suggested removing injector no. 4 and sticking a stiff wire down to feel when the piston is tdc. I found I had to remove the glowplug too.

worked well for me and timing is lined up.
