Looking in Bentley - it also shows two ways up but.... the small end of the thermostat always goes into the housing where the two large hoses connect - if that makes it any clearer.

the reason its opposite ways up depending on the age is the early water system pumps the water the opposite way round to the late system......

So kevtherev's reply is subject to the proviso that you have the system that uses one that way up!!!! :D
Up to '85 it goes to the top!!!!!

Could I have a later housing and an early pump??

Now that would be confusing??

nope
you have a plastic housing if it's on the back and to the left

By 'back' Kev means the side of the engine nearest the front of the van and on the left when viewed from behind the engine bay. :D

Von 'zurück' Kev bedeutet, dass die Seite des motor nächster der Vorderseite des van und auf der linken Seite aus gesehen hinter dem Motor bucht.

I put that into German Ian as it reads better :D

Confusing in't it
pulleys are the front
gearbox at the back is how I see it.

so later engines have it on the back
