I'm currently planning on upgrading my headlight wiring to prevent the candleight voltage drop. Can anyone shed any light (maybe with a diagram) of how I could incorporate a buzzer that will go off if I open the drivers door without turning the lights off when parked?

I fitted under-dash neon lights that only come on when the lights are on. I know instantly if my lights have been left on now

I have fitted a change-over relay (available from http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.u ... elays.html).

I connected the coil + to the cigarette socket (only live with ignition on) and the normally closed contact to the buzzer and a wire from the lights (I used the heater control illumination) to the common contact. The buzzer and coil -ve go to chassis. When the lights are on the power will flow through the contact. If the ignition is on the power doesn't continue to the buzzer but it does if the ignition is off.

Without doing a diagram, I'd get a relay, and trigger it from a connection to the door light , and connect the power feed side to the headlight switch ON power, and the other OUT side of to the buzzer and thence earth.

Does that make senese? Unless the door light is on, the relay of off, so headlight current won't flow. When door opens then headlight current feeds through the power side of the relay to the buzzer.

Maplins do a kit for I think £9.99 just saw it in their catologue not sure if its any good etc but they are usually good for givin reasonable instructions. Hope this helps D

I have the Maplin kit.
It does the job nicely.
Connection to lights, door wireing, and battery.
bleeps a couple of times if I leave the lights on with door open.
Enough to warn of lights left on but not annoying if I'm loading or unloading the van or if a passenger gets out.

I don't have a courtesy switch on the passenger door. At least my method works if I get out the other side. Though if I did it again I would use a less anoying buzzer!

I used two relays and a cheap buzzer: one relay is switched from headlight cable and other from a switch I fitted to doorpost (existing courtesy light switch was wired wrong way to use). When both relays are closed current flows to buzzer from main supply to ignition switch. Relays and buzzer mounted on cross beam under and to right of steergin column.

ive got one of those annoying but worth it buzzers was in the van when i got it if i switch of engine with lights still on it goes of annoying but worth the irritation
