intermittent wiper problem

Hi there I'm in need of a bit of electricery help with intermittent wipers.
I did the relay 19 to 99 upgrade on mine a few days ago (old style bullet fuses)and all is fine.
Tried to do my brothers RHD (later fuses) today and fit my old 19 relay and it kept blowing the 15amp fuse every time the wipers were switched to intermittent (should this be a bigger fuse) on mine its a 16 amp one so I think not?
I then whipped out my 99 relay to try that and although it never blew the fuse, once the wipers were switched to intermittent they were not intermittent and the wipers wouldn't turn off.
Any ideas?
cheers Rob.

What relay was in your brothers van to start with? I thought the later vans had the 19 fitted anyway?
I swapped my 19 for a 99 recently without problem (my van's 1990)

He didn't have one Bren, there was a weird thing in its place, like something connecting two of the pins together to complete a circuit.
His is an 89 Komet, cant remember if its an auto homes or an auto sleeper though at the moment.

It's Autohomes Rob same as mine. That shouldn't make any difference to the vehicle electrics though and as I said mine's a '90.
Sounds like someone's been having a fiddle, certainly if the fuse stays in with the wipers working normally I'd have thought it would have worked on intermittent.
When you say "like something connecting two of the pins together to complete a circuit" do you mean someone has linked out two of the slots the relay would have plugged into had there have been one there in the first place?

Yes Bren it looks factory though, I'll get a pic of it later and post it up.

Which two number are jumped together? (there are small numbers that would be under the relay for each pin)

I'll find out tomorrow Bob.
He didn't come round today due to the weather.
Cheers Rob.

Finally managed ot get him round.
Heres the connector in situ.
and here it is out of the fuse box.
I forgot to look at what the pin numbers were though.
It looks like 2 and 6.

Not seen that before

Mind you, I'm not in the habit of rooting through peoples gloveboxes either....
I'll have a squint at mine over the weekend if it's not hammering down

I have gone the 99 route without any problems, and mine's a 1992, and didn't have it already.

so did you have a 19 in originally then?
Rob, just looked at mine and it is pins 2 and 6 shorted out....

Yes, 19 was in originally.

I always feel there should be a 'how to' for the earlier fuseboxes too. There must be a way of fitting one even if the relay has to hang loose.

I've measured the resistance across the pins of both the 19 and 99 relays, and the pins that correspond to apertures 2 and 6 on the board are indeed at 0Ω when the relays are non-energised which that link reproduces.
Also, on closer inspection of Rob's picture of the shorting link in situ (zoomed in) it does look a bit DIY as the RHS curve doesn't look 'smooth' like a machine might produce. Perhaps the original relay was substituted because a shorting problem had developed? I mean, why remove an original (healthy or faulty) relay without replacing it with another? Not exactly an expensive item.
I think this link may have diverted us from what is essentially a problem in the wiring/switch itself - most likely intermittent side related?? The 15amp fuse is the right size.
I think this may be a case of getting the multimeter out or letting a sleeping dog lie, even if it does have a limp...

There is a how to in the wiki regarding the early fuse box intermittent mod.
Mines an early fuse box ( bullet type) and the relay just plugged straight in,but it didn't on my old van.
