Any tips on fitting new elec fuel pump please

Hi folks,

The mechanical fuel pump on my '82 air cooled 2.0l has finally failed and I've decided to fit a new electrical pump.
I've read as much as I can find on the subject (forum and wiki) but would just like to ask for any other hints or tips those more knowledgable than myself might like to offer.

The following parts arrived this morning from Just Kampers. Do I need anything else?
1 electric fuel pump
2m 5mm fuel hose (I'm planning to replace all the fuel lines, is 2m enough?)
1 fuel filter
6 fuel hose clips
Fuel pressure regulator kit which includes:
Fuel pressure regulator
mounting bracket
fuel fittings 5/16" (pair)
hose clamps for fuel pressure regulator

As always, many thanks in advance for any replies.

regards,
HB

john1,
Thanks for your reply.
Thanks to my limited experience and woefully inadequate knowledge I'm not sure I understand your question.
I was presuming that I'd be replacing the line from the tank to the pump, thence to the engine/carbs.
Would I be right in attempting this?
I'll be sitting down with my Haynes and my mechanic buddy over the weekend to finalise the plan of attack.

Have you undertaken a similar replacement?
Given the scarcity of my experience in these matters, what should I bear in mind while tackling this job?

Thanks again for your input.
Cheers,
HB.

Hi HB, I was talking about the power feed for the pump,,from coil or oil prs switch?

I fitted one last year.
Pipe from tank about a foot or so to the filter(under the bus), another foot or so to the lecky pump (fitted under the bus) pipe then up to the carbs via the regulator (set at No2).
I left the old pump in place with the pipe just in case i ever wanted to put it back on as a back up.

john1,
Ah, ok, I'm with you now.
What would be the preferred option- coil or oil prs switch?
Without hitting any major snags how long do you reckon this should take to complete?
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
Cheers,
HB

I went for the coil and it didn't take that long. Let me know how you get on.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but where is the best place to fit the fuel pump. I have an lpg system fitted to my van (1.9 petrol ) and at present the electric pump is fitted in the engine bay and quite high up. When the van has been stood a while maybe a week it very rarely wants to start on petrol. Just wondered If the pump is fitted too high. Cheers . Daz

Hi Guys. My electric pump is under the van on the main structual member just past the jacking point. It was already on when I got the camper so I cant help with fitting but they are quite noisy( well mine is!) I actually cut the wire the other day and fitted a hidden rocker switch in the cab so if anyone tried to nick it ir only goes for 30 seconds then runs out of fuel! Very cheap security!! :ok

I have read a post that the pump should be fitted as close to the tank as possible as it's a pressure pump and not a suction pump (I think it doesn't have the power to suck the fuel a long way through the lines form tank to carb, but can 'push' it ok)

So... we (well I mean my brother's mate, Allan) has fitted the pump just after the tank and before the filter. An old camping mat has donated a square inch or two for insulation/padding between the pump and the vehicle.
The job isn't completed yet - we hit a wee snag, nothing major, just a different diameter fuel line needing connected.
I think we're fitting the pressure regulator somewhere in the engine bay to 1)keep it clean and 2)accessible. There is confusion about the setting of the gauge - some advocate #2 setting, others #3. The instructions lead me to opt for #2. There are half settings too. No doubt we'll muck around with the setting to see which works best.
Hopefully she'll be purring away by bed time tonight.
I'll post full details and pics when it's done.

cheers
HB

My mistake, the pump was indeed fitted after the filter.

And the good news is she was purring away earlier this evening :D

I'll post up pics and a full debrief later this week.

Thanks to all who posted contributions/comments.

Cheers,
HB
