just wandering is normal for a 1.6td cali westy not to like hills especialy in deven it just seems to die

1600 diesel .....twenty odd years old dragging a 2 ton van up a bank.........gravity v horsepower....

I had a jx in my joker for four years...good on the flat.....even better downhill.......but sloooooowed down on the climbs.

trying to diagnose whether it was related to something i could address, becasue it's painfully slow. i would have expected *slightly* better hill-climbing performance....

i would dread to think about trying to lug it up alpine mountain passes!

Hello. I have a 1983 Devon camper and she has never liked hills. I just put her in second ans slowly wind my way up at a nice relaxing pace. I never see any traffic, unless I look at the three mile tailback behind me

yes thats what i expected it runs great on the flat cruises at 70 all day on the motorway fully loaded but its down to 30 ish up them dam hills does azz have the same problem

Aaz is slightly better, but not worth the expense if your jx is working. I would look at making sure the jx is in good health, and maybe go down the charge cooler route with some extra fueling. That's what I would have done in hindsight.

I have the AAZ and it doesn't struggle up hills, but then its recently rebuilt with a New turbo and exhaust. The JX if in good condition isn't to far off the AAZ 5HP less and a bit less torque. not really worth it unless you are going for an engine change anyway and you can lay your hands on a good AAZ (not many out there)

Look on the bright side, it's pleasure motoring from a bygone age. You can be sure of having the open road stretching away in front of you..................

the aaz is still way under powered, and gutless better of saving your money and fitting a 130bhp tdi
