Hi, does anyone want to quote to strip and rebuild my engine. The engine is out and tinware removed. I just need confidence in the engine, so i guess new rings, both solex carbs need a refurb probably and the engine just needs a good looking at. It runs albeit lumpy and the clutch is good. I can deliver the engine and collect obviously. Or recommend anyone.. Give us a quote please?

Have you thought about having a go yourself?
With a Haynes manual, fairly basic tool kit and the help & guidance from the good people on here, we rebuilt ours in no time with no previous experience in this area, including refurbing the fuel pump, both carbs, dizzy, changed pistons, barrels, rings, new valves in and lapped, new clutch, etc...
It was really quite easy tbh - the hardest bit was getting the engine in and out of the van!
We did all this for about £700 and she is running like a dream (touch wood) with +7k miles on
Seriously, have a think about it. Serious £££ saved and you know it is done right rather than by some of the rip-off merchants there are out there...

if i lived closer id come and rebuild it with you , as said you can do it all you need is a biasic tool kit and a tourqe wrench,or even get a manual and look it over ive just rebuilt my vw tdi engine it dropped a valve and did,
head
camshaft
piston
con rod
i rebuilt it outside on a hill, while we had snow and rain took me three days on and off
and it was the first time ive ever had to touch a tdi engine
give it go, and then you can stand back and say " i did that"

Definately worth having a go yourself, I rebuilt my 2ltr cu two years ago on the kitchen table
and its been running fine since. Haynes manual is ok but "How to rebuild your air cooled vw engine" by Tom Wilson is much better with loads of quality photos and info.

Hi I borrowed this DVD from a mate of mine on how to completely strip and rebuild a type 4 motor. You need Volume 8.

Watching a video of a full strip and rebuild gives me a little more confidence than the 'trusty' Haynes manual. Actually seeing the job being done you get a much better idea of what they're referring to at each step.
