Hi mate , I'm in process of taking my 1.9 1y out out my van as I'm in London and can't use diesel in van because of low emission zone , I'm going to put golf gti in mine , my engine was fitted by syncro nuts in Scotland ( famously rebuild T25's) , engines smooth and complete ,
What area are you in ,
Gaz ,

Morning , mate
Engines very good , still in van , can hear it running ,
My van was imported here from german army about 3 yrs ago then had engine done at syncro nuts , and few months ago I drove it down from Glasgow to London , very smooth , used it until jan then new emission laws came out within m25 area .
So has to be changed for London use ,
If it's worth you coming down I'll take 200 at least it's got all you need ,
Cheers
Gaz

Hi Shrek - im in Nottingham - West Bridgford (although im not here much it seems) and have done a few 1Y conversions. Feel free to get in touch.

I dont know much about the SDI but im guessing its the future. However, there are some 1Ys around with low mileage and it really is a simple conversion.

Do some research on the net about the engine type (the SDI one). Is it a fly by wire? Does it have an immobiliser built in (if so, can it be bypassed or do you need to transplant the whole key assembly/wiring loom), what side of the block is the oil dipstick in relation to the flywheel?

Shame your KY engine has gone pop - mine was the best engine i ever had but eventually i had to replace it with a 1Y...

Good luck,

Ringo

Heres some old info for you when i did it. There is a lot of newer information and experience around - its been a good four years since i changed a 1Y. Suggest you trawl the alternative engine forum. Unfortunately a serach for "1Y" wont yield any results due to it being under four characters and not working on our search engine.....

Heres some past links of mine - not all are that good - but will give you some reading all the same:

Read up on the subject and it should become apparent that you literally take off everything from the 1Y (just leave the head, injectors glow plugs and the fuel pump on (thats not a definitive list just a quick summary to give you an idea)) so you are more or less left with a block. Then you take everything off your existing diesel and stick it on the 1Y.

Good luck

Ringo

BTW (turn your caps lock off :) )

I spoke to TFL today ,my vehicle is listed as a van with 8 seats with DVLA , according to them all I have to do is change it to minibus on V5 .
Checked my vin plate -- gvw 2460kg ,
It's not a camper ,it's an ex german army minibus , originally with 8 seats ,
If I put details in manually it's classed as a car , on reg number : computer says no?

I'll contact DVLA next

Cheers all 8)
