You shouldn't smell gas, will mean something is not right.

Time for soapy water to check all joints, definitely should be no smell of gas. Explosion risk so don't fire it up until you have found the source.
Brand new or new to you?

Check all the joints that you have made - is it hard wired ie copper pipe with compression joints or rubber hose?

I put my propex in myself with hard lines and it's really easy to get a slight leak on a joint. I highly recommend a can of leakage detector spray , it's only a fiver and much easier than soapy water. Take your time and cover each joint and slowly tighten them all until you're happy with all the joints.

The one into the back of the propex had to be tightened all the way until flush.

Just be methodical and don't rush, you shouldn't smell any gas at all anywhere
