Hi everyone! Im a newbie here having just got our first t25 at the weekend, its a 1982 2.0 Aircooled Auto Sleeper.

When the key is turned in the ignition I get this quite loud rythmatic tapping noise from the engine bay, once the engine starts it normally stops within a few minutes, but does come back sometimes whilst driving.

As far as I can see, hear and feel the part making this noise is located on the right hand side of the engine bay, has two black rubber pipes going it. I would of said it was a pump, am I right? i am fairly mechanically minded, but this is my first foray into the world of old skool v-dubs, so I'm abit green when its comes to the engine at the mo!

I will try and upload a pic of the tapping part.

Many thanks in anticipation!

Hi and welcome, my guess would be an electric fuel pump.....
And well fitted by the way the hoses have been connected
Definitely not got one on mine

Yes it is and electric fuel pump. The noise is the pump priming mainly due to it being fitted in the wrong place they should be mounted close to the fuel tank and as near to the bottom level of the tank as possible as they are designed as a pressure not a suction pump.

This is where my one is mounted just behind the fuel tank.

Thanks for that chaps! I will look into getting that moved. Is it best to use all new wiring, or can I successfully use connectors?
