MOT Hell !!

Aaaaargh... So.....
the garage MOT fails my van on x 2 rear wheel bearings and I tell them to do the job I as I really don't have the time. They have the van for 3 days then phone to say it's a specialist job as they cant get the drive shaft free from the bearings and tell me to collect the van, no MOT, no work done.
The question is, do they seize up so solid that nothing will come adrift, or is this just a lazy garage ?. I'm in Birmingham, there aren't many (or at least I can't find them) T25 sympathetic mechanics about and I don't want to p the garage off as it's the only MOT station for miles that can accommodate a high top.
All help gratefully received as I'm not h.a.p.p.y

Probably couldn't undo the axle nut or rounded off the allen bolts on outer CV joint. Not particularly specialist and certainly DIY. By the way, some testers seem to fail T25 bearings when the perceived play may be within tolerance. Not saying they're not worn but does happen.

Change your garage sharpish. What sort of mechanics are they.

After being kindly shown how to do it, its not hard? No need to undo driveshafts or even break into brake lines. Just need to press out/in the bearings which can be done without a press.

How do you press out the rear wheel bearings and replace without removing the rear hub.Can you give a brief explanation.

probably easier if you have a look at this video, we did the same on my van

Ah yes thanks for the video link.Top marks to Jed for the video.Prehaps the garage that suggested a specialist to replace the rear wheel bearings should look at this video.A few red faces from them i would suspect.

Hi
I did this job, and some other work recently. I took a number of photos which can be seen on my thread below:
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=96156" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(sorry, don't know how to do the clever 'linky' thing!)
On the first page are most of the pics to help you understand what's what, but I would add (in retrospect!) that, as stated above, and per Jed's video, you *should* be able to pull the hub off the stub axle WITHOUT disconnecting the CV/driveshaft.
Good luck....

Press not actually essential if you don't have access to one. If you remove bearing housing and you're careful, you can drift out the old one with a cold chisel (will be scrap anyway) and fit the new one by tapping very gently around the circumference until its home. Unfortunately bearing housings themselves can sometimes oval and even a new bearing may not eliminate play.

Thanks all

. When I went to collect my van the tester admitted that they hadn't got a socket big enough to undo the castled nut !!!!!!!!!!!!. What a bunch of jokers
