Rear 98mm CV joints upgrade feedback

So who is running the 98mm porsche 944Turbo/S3 etc.. CV joints and what can they say about them in practice, did they fit easily, have the boots lasted, have the cv's lasted, has anything else broken instead ?
be nice to have some feedback on them, most of us 14" are still running standard CVs but as they wear/break and need replacing making an informed choice would be helpful
personally at the moment I'm using only genuine original T3 joints and only used ones at that, because I bought a new GKN one 5 years ago and it failed inside 18 months (doing only road work) and I'm convinced that the quality of the materials used to make stuff now is massively inferior to that used 10-20 years ago and thus the quality of new parts is inferior in many cases to that of the originals which generally do 100k plus miles 20 years without failure (and GKN and the other oem suppliers now make a lot of stuff in China as they have set up plants to service the VW/Audi plants out there)
I only run 20mm lift as I personally think that's the safe limit beyond which you are seriously pushing the design limits, other than that and a decat pipe my van is stock but it does get used off road and all I seem to have been going through is front outer cv boots , again the black ones available now seem inferior to the old white ones, but I haven't got any early front cv's with the wide groove that will take the old pattern boot - I have finally fitted cv boot guards so hopefully the reduced crud and sticks and stones load on the boots will reduce the failure rate
so what do you know ?
and yes if you have these fitted as front inners then that would be interesting too

Not exactly pertaining to the above Aidan...
Someone sent me
this link in the US but cannot see syncro; just 2wd. I have asked if they do syncro, but thought I'd chip in in case it was a new lead...

All this driveshaft/cvj stuff confuses the hell out of me, why is there so many options none of which seems satisfactory?
Aidan, on the thread
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... le&start=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it says there is interference if you fit the 16" bigger outer cvj, apparantly 14"-16" are slightly different, it has photos showing the boot rubbing the bearing housing.
I would like to have a spare front and rear driveshaft, used rears are available second hand, but at 300E! Fronts seem mission impossible

Fraid I don't know anything about the 16" variants other than what I see when I work on the gearboxes/front diffs and what I can read on Etka/Etos, I've never worked on a 16" side by side with a 14" to look at and compare the various parts
I sold the two rear SA 108mm driveshafts I had complete for £80 each, made a tenner each on them, for Euro300 I'd want new cvs and a warranty on them, we could have them remade for that sort of money
JesB has a new contact in 16" land with front shaft(s) available
Try Stuart at SyncroHospital for SA parts from SA, or wait till Russel gets there and get him to ship you some rear shafts
oh and I don't do Samba I rely on anything interesting being posted up on here which generally it seems to be
so back to the 14" HD CV joints question

98mm is the size of the 16" outer as well I thought? I thought standard 14" was 90mm?
That's the reason I mentioned it, I have been known to be wrong before....

That Empi link looks good but there are a few things that need to be said about 'race' equipment. Generally anything that is made for race cars is not that durable and will not last that long. Someone mentioned Fox Shox on another thread. Anything fitted with speherical bearings wont last p1551ng time. 'Race' equipment is designed to last for a race not 100k miles ....

ok so I'm talking 98mm rear CV joints or front inners
not front outers of any sort

Check with Stan, but I'm pretty sure he said he fitted Porsche CV's plus it has a 50mm lift.
Not sure when they were fitted or how many miles they have done before I owned it but I have done about 4500 miles with the MV and about 2500 with the TDI. Hasn't really been pushed hard off road, just a bit of green laning.
A couple of the boots have been changed due to splitting but there is no audible knocking.
Not really the long term test you are after but a step in the right direction.

90mm are beetle IRS ones... 98mm are std T25/bay window ones.. Rears and front inners on Syncro's.. 108mm ones are 16" syncro rears and "SA" (South African) 2wd..
I have a set of the "944" ones, GKN and GKN Lobro boots on the rear.. the boots are cracking and will be changed before SP.. (What a pain) been on 3 years done maybe 10k.. lifted with TD spacers and longer travel AVO shocks.. lots of long distance at 60-70 mph, loaded and towing.. + the usuall abuse off road..
I have notices a slight amount of play in each joint.. which is dissapointing to be fair.. you can feel it if holding the drive shaft and twisting the joint..
Hopefully if I get chance this week, I want to pop over to my local 944 breaker and see if he has a good set of gen cv's lying around to have a look at.. Then I shall make up my spare rear driveshafts with them.. and hopefully pick up some nice boots too... from what I have read, those porsche ones are great quality..
Fronts outers are gen (white, but looks green from whatever grease is in it) and a black later one, thats been on there 6 years.. Front inners need changing as have some play but are prob the originals...

Have to agree there. There is so much 5h1te in the VW aftermarket. A huge amount of VW stuff from the good old US of A is of poor quality so be careful

So whats the difference between 944 and 930 joints?

i`ve asked a friend of mine about the 944 joints and he`s cross referanced part numbers and he recons gkn list them as being the same joint.
i read a right up on samba about ages ago about useing different joints that were either narrower or thicker than oe joints. i spoke with footstuck about it and we couldn`t figure out how they would allow for more angle.
i`d be interested to see a 944 joint next to a oe joint.
Aidan i`d tend to agree about the quality of products these days. nothing is made to last anymore.
