Fire Pits / Braziers

My and some friends are off to our favourite campsite soon, one that allows off-ground fires. Last time we bodged something from rocks we gathered, but this time want to do it properly.

Ash is a consideration, so I think either a bowl-style fire pit or a brazier with ash pan is what's needed. The challenge with all these things of course is space inside the van. I try to avoid using the main space of the van as in-transit storage.

I'm strongly leaning towards this: http://www.somersetfirepits.co.uk/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's got one removable leg, and there's an optional bag so I don't end up with an ashy-van. Compact enough to fit in my rear overhead storage. And it can be adapted into being a bbq/grill with another simple bit of kit. Or maybe even a dutch oven contraption, with a tripod and chains.

Any got any good/bad experiences with fire pits or braziers?

looks nice, although i would be worried about it only having one leg. Personally i wouldnt want to lug something like that around, but it's always nice to sit around someone elses in the evening :lol:
I keep on toying with the idea of getting this one http://www.tauntonleisure.com/tentipi-h ... -bag/p5950" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can't see how one spike is going to be very stable after a couple of hours bunging logs into the pan working the spike backwards and forwards.

I've converted an old washing mashine drum..made & fitted three swivel out legs, works a treat!. All the perforations in the stainless steel drum help to airate the wood and when in full tilt the whole body glows orange with heat yet once cool still looks good unlike your average mild steel pit which will turn rusty in a matter of weeks after it's first outing burns away the black paint.

They have become pretty popular over the last 2-3 years but popular for a good reason, they really do work very well.

That was my first thought. I love converting scrap for other purposes. Packability is the thing here, though.

If I didn't worry about having a T25, here's what my mates made out of three scrapped customs and excise trucks.

As you were. :ok

Gill and I have been looking for one of these for ages now but cannot find the one we want.

In the past we had an oblong BBQ with 4 folding legs, an adjustable wire grill etc. We sometimes used to stand it on a couple of bricks to make it a little higher off the ground. Later in the evening we would load it with wood and have an off the ground log fire. We have had some BRILLIANT late nights sitting around a VERY hot fire and enjoying the flames and the re-loading ritual :)

That one finally succumbed to the heat :(

Now we wish to buy one the same, but cannot find one anywhere. I found a picture of an almost identical item and this version looks even stronger in it's construction (note this is not one of the sub £10 tin ones !) =

E D I T = I found that they are available, search for hibachi cast iron, but reviews are variable :?

Similar to the one Leeroy posted...we have one of these. We don't take the lid, so it folds pretty flat into a shopping bag. Have had it a while and it seems to be lasting quite well.

Got ours off ebay.
