Got abit of a mystery going on....

Every now and then the van starts to lose power and wont go any faster than 40. The first few times we thought it was oil, stopped & filled and we were fine again. This time, the oil was fine so we filled up with petrol and it seemed to fix the problem. The petrol gauge isn't perfect but we thought it did have about half a tank in already.

Does anybody have any ideas what the problem is? We thought it might be something in the petrol tank or the fact that it is stood unused on weekdays?

was it running HOT?
CU's loose power if they are over heating, and by stopping to fill up oil or petrol it would have cooled????
