Recommended Carburetor

Hey guys
went to the mechanics to check up on the van and he recommended that I should replace the Carburettor. Should I buy new or refurbish?
I have a 1588 air-cooled t25, I wouldn't know where to start for parts.
Any ideas where I can get something that will fit? I plan on selling soon but I want a few weekend stints before I sell.

Generally, carbs either suffer from blockages, poorly operating accelerator jet or worn throttle shaft (terrible idling). Get a gasket kit for it and let Roger Ball (see in WIKI under carbs) rebush the throttle shaft for you. Should run like new.

You don't say what symptoms you have. We may be able to help diagnose.

I hate to say it, but my recommendation would be to get rid of the 1588 CT engine, and put a 1970cc CU engine.

It sounds like a drastic measure, but in my experience, and I've had a few CT engined vans, you will struggle to get them right, due to a number of reasons...And if you did get it right, you would quickly realise, that the engine is way too underpowered to be in a T25 van...Even VW would openly admit that nowadays...Unless a vehicle is super, super cheap, I never buy CT engined vans nowadays...They are just too much of a ball ache.

A nice CU, running on original twin solex carbs is a great engine for the T25 if you set it up right.

I am a massive fan of stock set up's...and I am not a fan of modifications at all....VW didn't get it right in the mid-late 70's with the CT engine, and they threw millions at desiging and testing it... Your chances of getting it right the thick end of 40 years later, just by adapting a different carb are pretty slim.

Take the plunge, source a good CU motor, and fit that instead...I could possibly help if you are struggling.

Sorry to be so abrupt about it, but IMO that would be your best, and probably easiest option.

If you have a dingy, Your CT engine would at least make a decent mud weight :wink:

I plan on selling soon, so getting a whole new engine wouldn't be the best of options.
I might just leave it as is, it runs fine now it was just a recommendation. The mechanic said the revs are not stable so he recommended he cleaned it up or get a new one. He suggested new because he said a refurbished one would cost a similar price to a clean etc. Thanks for the suggestion though.

One of the 'advances' on the CT engine was the use of electro mechanical ignition using a 'Hall effect' sensor in the ignition.

As this will be at least 30 years old, it will start giving problems.

Don't worry .... :)

Ante fitting is available, By this I mean you can fit the earlier SVDA distributor and coil, for less than the price of a Hall sensor.

The carb, 34 pict solex 3/4. Probably the best solex of the period, very sensitive. The problems occur with the pipework connecting to the airbox. The pipe is so cheap, change it all. A carb overhaul kit is well worth the effort, but practice on your lawnmower first. :rofl :rofl

With the SVDA dizzy, you can blank all the pipes off, and improve performance at NO COST.


My advice, Get recovery, enjoy the van this Summer, when the ignition packs up , fit as above ( from simon bbc on e.bay), contact me for setup, no worries.
