E D I T = this started out as a simple question about access to the insides and has ended up as a tale of fixing a knackered bearing !

I have been offered (cheap) a Propex 1600 that sounds like it has got a stuck or otherwise duff fan, I seem to recall reading (on here) they are a sealed, (non DIY repairable) unit ? (note, I would not be "bodging it" if I did get inside)

My later model is repairable i.e. you can get the cover off.

Is that the special tool that replaces this earlier version =

.

Mind you, "straight" answers still accepted, before I chuck £100 at one that is "non functioning"...

Can't you just ask the seller? Or get a model number and phone Propex?

Even if it was sealed I'd bet gaining access wouldn't be that difficult - it is just a glorified tin can after all; a few rivets to drill out possibly. I doubt it would be welded......

i bought one from a member off here a while back..its the orange one aint it(might be red) with the inlet/exhaust on different sides??

well the one i got had a terrible noise coming from the motor and upon inspection the magnets that are glued to the outer casing of the motor had come adrift and were rubbing on the windings/armature thingy...so i used some apoxy resin stuff..might have been chemical metal..and glued them back on.its been alright ever since.

mine was just bolts and was sealed along the joins with mastic

for how much they cost there is surprisingly not much in the box..so very simple to fault find

OK, off to get this in the next day or so :) It is currently on a T25, so at least I will get all the plumbing etc with it :)

My electronics background should stand me in good stead (famous last words :? )

I have one in mine but due to the thermostat position I suspect mine was retro fitted unless someone relocated the 'stat out of preference, but somehow I doubt it. Your thermostat is adjacent to the socket in the boxed section above the windows, yes? If so, it will be a major hassle removing the wiring to it so I'd suggest removing the 'stat and leaving the wiring safely isolated and in situ.

The other wiring and pipes are pretty much confined to the kitchen unit. The supply comes from behind the electrical boxing at the bottom of the cupboard behind the driver's seat. Shelf over electrical box has been removed in this picture.

The red relay is for the fridge. The blade fuse is what feeds the propex unit and controls. You won't have the ruddy great thick cable as I installed that......

:idea don't suppose you're located anywhere near Coventry; I would mind nipping over and helping if you're reasonably close?

Oooooo... I like to see power cables that size for heaters - whether Propex, Eberspacher or Webasto. Provided the return is the same of course.

The return is the black one you can just make out bolted to the 'B' pillar and painted over with black Hammerite (just below the '1664' I painted to clean the brush off).
The power cable to the Propex is the one exiting the blade fuse; about 2mm I reckon. The F.O big cable runs up to the Zig unit and 500W inverter and is 10mm just in case I ever need the inverter running at full pelt....which I would only do if the engine was running so the alternator took the load not the poor old leisure battery

Yep you're right, Crewe is a tad out of my way. You have my phone number though don't you just in case?
