I have been looking for one for a couple of weeks now, there doesn't seem to be many around with decent mileage,they have even dropped off the rip off breakers yards list.
Plenty of 1ys,1z's and any other tdi variant, but no aaz's.

I'm told most are snapped up within hours of getting to the yards, and end up filling containers going to Poland and the eastern European countries.

Rob, you'll need to buy a car with one in, before they get to the scrappie yard. Also allows you to assess it in situ (and get any other bits that go with it)

Lloyd, wasn't aware it was a JX, thought 1.9. So much less likely pulley bolt than i thought

Have been looking at that too, most are either tdi's,1y's or going on for 200,000 miles.
seems like the scrapage sceme put a big dent in the market.
Even googling, not one aaz came up on the breakers lists, yet i found a 1z with 90,000 for £150 on ebay.

A french guy over here had a Jx with the crank pulley gone, think they go quicker on the AAZ due to ribbed alternator belts but JX isn't immune.
Buy a 1Y and turbo it seem to like it you can transfer over your jx injectors pump and lines (1Y injectors and lines have differnet size or something) with the rest the 1y's seem to like it and you get more torque always a good thing. just don't over tune and make sure that the block has 1.9D/TD on it which is the same as the AAZ one with oil squirters MR hutch on Brickyard and ringo on the wiki have lots of info basically the same instal as an AAZ but just got to change pump and injectors aswell with all the neccesary bits to hand you could have it done in two days best of luck

I have a 72.000 1Y with D/TD in the garage but don't like the idea of turboing it, I mean if it was an aaz without a turbo surely it would be called an aaz, I cant see them casting different engine prefixes due to bolt on stuff?

Might be OK if your driving down the shops and back in a campervan and back with the odd VW show etc... but I wouldnt want to do that to a 1y and drive up a mountain in Wales, drive across Europe in one etc.

I just dont personally know anyone who has done it and driven it like I would like to drive it so hope to stand corrected.

I had four in my garage till the other day ..... then Paul bought one! I now have three in my Garage!

Pussies !!! the 1y is a strong beast and can rev higher than AAZ and can well take a turbo IMHO did a lot of research on them and was preferred by some to the AAZ as was intending to turbo one before I broke it's head in fact if I'd known about being able to put in the jx pump and injectors before I put it in would have been running it turboed up mountains across Europe etc etc it ran with a turbo but no boost on the pump but served me well was slow due to lacking the extra fuelling so i drove it hard but served me well. Well worth looking at brickyard and mr hutch's and ringo's stuff on wili and talk to them interestingly the block is the same and possibly the crank the conrods are supposedly stronger than aaz but the pistons are slightly weaker from memory obviously won't last as long as standard or probably an AAZ but will take a good bit of hammering I would say and a lot cheaper than an AAZ and a lot more around so could have one in reserve??

And i sold my AAZ for £350!!

I bought that in a Jetta for £600 - it was the best option available to me. I drove it and it was a good engine - piece of mind.

MrHutch turbo's his 1Y and i think he's getting fed up with telling people to how good it was. I reckon it will be fine if you ensure you keep the engine oil temps within range - so get a big oil cooler on it and an oil temp gauge - TBH, i'd insist on that in an AAZ too.
Rob IIRC yours has 72K miles on it? I'd bang it in....

Dont look for the obvious cars for an AAZ - ibiza's had AAZ's later than VW models. Jetta's dont fetch the same cash as a golf or passat....

Bought two more AAZ engines complete today. Drove one and heard the other run etc .... That makes 5 AAZ engines in my shed ... !!
