Can I ask ...pushrods... they look like the “non hydraulic” set I have just replaced with my Californian import hydraulic length set... I wanted to reinstate hydraulic tappets but couldn't find the pushrods in the UK. The ends are very different on my new set.

Hello,

These are hydraulic tappets (cam followers)..

With correct length pushrods.. all standard..

Fit hydraulics if you can, less aggressive on the cam, and, once set, hassle free..

Hello,

A peaceful.. no factory noise.. no stress hour in the workshop... 8)

Oil cooler. filler, and oil filter body fitted..

Then the heat exchangers..

It's looking seriously good. How long before you fire it up? Hopefully the oil pressure will be ok this time. Fingers crossed!

Hi, me again, are you fitting a thermostat? I notice the lack of a tacky plastic wheel, I have the wheel but no thermostat or mounting bracket. I know you can only get “cool running” (70 instead of 80 degree opening) units but up here in the frozen north is it worth fitting?
Also have you painted your fan housing? Cleaned mine up but it looks a little corroded now the dirt is off. If I was to paint what would you go for?

Hello,

Tonight's demonstration...

is the no hassle way to fit the engine mount and crossbar...

Firstly slide in 4 bolts into the alloy casting, and 2 on the steel outer engine bearer bar...

Then wongle the left hand side of the bar past the clip on the lhs heat exchanger...

You can now nip up the alloy casting bolts..

Now slacken off the nuts holding the inner silentblocs

So that you can align the cross bar bolts..

Then tighten everything up... easy..

Now we are going to test fit the fan housing..

Make sure that the top tin in picture is dropped in place, and hold it before offering up the housing, (the one on the other side drops and stays in place)

Loosely fit one bolt at the rear of the housing for the exhaust support bracket...

and make sure the metal plate 'wraps round' the fan housing correctly..

Now fit the 2 bolts and nuts to secure the housing..(you may need a 'thin walled' 13 mm socket for the nuts)

Make sure you use the correct (plate not wavy) washers..

That's it for the demo....

Answer questions from the audience....

The awful thermostat, pulley and 'wongy' flaps all go in the bin..

I will show the mod for this later..

Brightening up sad alloy castings,, I use silver hammer finish,, brushed on then stippled to raise the hammer effect..

I do a first coat before assembly.. and then go round 'touching up' at the end

and if you are looking for God and oil pressure.. try reading 'Round the bend' by Nevil Shute.. :wink:

Next will be initial timing and so on...

Hello,

This evening starts off uncontroversially.....

Fit this lower tin.. 2 screws will do for the moment.. then fit the pushrod and fuel pump with its little hose..

So far so good.....

Now the controversial topic......

The wingy wongy flap syndrome.. :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :evil: :evil: :evil: :rofl :rofl :rofl

As usual most of the mechanism was missing, and the flaps were scraping against tinware and casting.. so I don't see how it was doing much..

But at least the spring clips...

were still there. and so are the pins inside the fan casing..

This engine will be for an automatic gearbox, and so I'm putting the oil cooler flap back, , blocked, with no control wire.

So back before oil pressure failure, you posted a photo showing the advantage of a half moon spanner when refitting the exhaust. The previous owner of our van clearly didn't have such a device so modified the tin ware as required...
