Did the owner of the "firm" see the job or maybe he was on hoilday! Not defenending the job but was all the stuff ie lock,washers,etc painted before.

Just to re-iterate what i have spoken to you about, speak to trading standards as they are the best people to advise you as to how you can proceed with getting anything sorted from the guy. Start dating and timing conversations and send all letters recorded mail.
Its a horrible feeling knowing you have paid all that money and its not what you paid for or in your case even use.
Just because he was a vw nut doesn't make him any better than joe blogs
