Just watched a video on YouTube and the guy was servicing his cv joints and his inner races were heavily pitted on one side like mine and his advice was is to flip the joint so it now wears on the none pitted side thus extending its service life! Is this right? He was American btw!

The old advice may have been to add straw and sawdust ..... I wouldn't do that either if I were you. It's not like new ones aren't available is it. You don't want to believe everything you seen on these diy videos :rofl

Afternoon all. Really need some help please. Trying to get the gearbox back on the van and I've managed to get to a point where it's on jacks and on the engine but no matter what I do it just won't go together! Working on my own as well as everyone I know is unable to help physically. Been at it for the best part of the day now and got nowhere. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I had the same trouble when I did mine. It's very fiddle to get it right. Turns out I had the gearbox too high. It sort of goes on at an angle and then jacks up and bolts into place. Try dropping the back end of the gearbox down.

Thanks. Think I know what your saying. Sheared off the bleed screw on the slave cylinder now! Used my trusty screw extractor and that's snapped inside it now! Total nightmare today :( probably game over for this cylinder can't drill it out either

Try with the box in gear and hold one output flange still while you turn the other and push the box in at the same time [you'll need 4 arms!!!]

So been thinking.....

Are the early and late petrol bell housings the same size?

Also can I drill a new hole next to the old hole on the slave cylinder and tap accordingly?

Thanks

Hi
No u cant drill new coz there is a tapered seat at the bottom which is the seal.
Also the where it enters chamber needs to be at the highest point.
Bottom line - fit a new slave cylinder!!
Reasonable price and you have no worries for a few years!

If box and engine won't go together within a reasonable period of time then it'll be clutch plate alignment. The ideal tool is an input shaft from a gearbox for obvious reasons but the hole only needs to be slightly out of alignment and you'll struggle. I found (in the absence of a tool), using a mirror (small makeup mirrors are ideal) and a torch, you can look straight down the hole in the centre of the clutch and get a better idea of how misaligned it might be without having to crane your head round. As for slave cylinder, just change it.
